Day 6 was dedicated to lower Manhattan. We went to see Wall Street, the heart of the world finance. It's a rather short street, maybe shorter than the houses next to it. And it lies almost always in the shadow, does that mean anything? :-)
The street is heavily guarded by armed police officers, so I guess the Tiffany's store here does not have any trouble with robbers.
Just some meters from the subway we came along Federal Hall where George Washington became first president of the United States and the first congress came together.
Then there it was: The New York Stock Exchange, where the financial crisis came from :-) Unfortunately some company celebrated it's 100th year of being listed at the NYSE by hiding the house behind a large banner. However, the inside would have been much more interesting, but it isn't open to the public anymore since some years.
Then we went on under the sky-high buildings.....and saw the back entrance of it. Maybe even one or more stock billionaires crossed our way..who knows...
At the end of the street, next to a small park named Bowling Green there is the famous sculpture of a riging bull, which became a symbol for the financial world, representing the energy of the stock market.
Not sure if touching its horns brings luck for the broker business, but there have to be other powers as well, since we saw a lady touching the bull at an other place than the head...!? :-)
The next steps of our walk led us through a street market with Mexican and South-American food. We were tempted to take a lunch break, but after short consideration everybody agreed that the peanut butter/jelly/banana sandwiches from breakfast would last some more hours in our stomachs and there is no room for something else.. :-)
Then, finally, we hit the water. Its the Hudson River here, the same where someone landed a jumbo jet successfully a couple of years ago. The skyline of Brooklyn is on the other side of it, looked nice bat rather small compared to Manhattan.
First sight was the NY helicopter base. Maybe there's some spare money left at the and of our stay.. :-)
Then we came along South Street Seaport, a former dock, where a couple of old sailing ships can be visited.
Inside the old dock building, Pier 17, there's a very small shopping mall, featuring some souvenir shops and even a Victoria's Secret shop. This time we strictly went forward without buying something.
Then Brooklyn Bridge came in sight, the most famous of the NY bridges. Our idea was to get on it to take some pictures of the Manhattan waterfront.
But first we had to pass a street with some worn down old building, something unexpected here below the skyscrapes of Wall Street.
On our search for the pedestrian ramp onto Brooklyn Bridge we further came along City Hall......and One Police Plaza, the NYPD headquarter known from many movies and tv shows like CSI NY and Law and Order..
Then, finally and with the help of and old Asian lady we found the way up and here it is: Brookly Brigde and its wooden pedestrian walkway one level above the car lanes. Of course we took some pictures, as many others did as well..
The sun was about to set so the plan was to head home taking the subway, maybe some hopping on the way :-) NYC subway system was so far very easy and convinient, nothing to complain about. We haven't used it at night, though.
We left the train at 34th Street, where the famous Macy's is located. After the rather calm area downtown we were right back in the middle of the crazy street traffic and the endless stream of people..
Macy's itself was a bit disappointing, at least we had other expectations. So we only bought a coffee at the Starbucks on the 3rd floor and tried to get out again, which wasn't so easy because of the confusing system of one way escalators and redirections because of reconstruction works, we almost got lost there... :-)
Then back home to Times Square, just by following the light, and all the time sidestepping the rushing people which constantly flow fromk somewhere. The evening was great, we had steak for dinner and then watched the NFL Thursday Night Game, where the Baltimore Ravens unfortunately lost to the Atlanta Falcons..
